This module you read about the
history of substance abuse counseling; the development of state,
national, and international drug policies; laws; and the impact of each
on substance abusers and substance abuse counseling. In this Discussion,
reflect on how history, policies, and laws will impact you in your work
as a substance abuse counselor. Consider the impact that substance
abuse has on society and how you might work to create a broader social
change beyond the individual substance abuse client.
For this module’s discussion forum in Module 1, respond to the following:
Provide an analysis of the societal costs of addiction and substance abuse. Provide a description of at least 3 historical elements that you believe contributed most to the substance abuse issue in todays society. Justify your selections and explain the direct and indirect impact of each element. Then, describe a national or international policy that has either positively or negatively impacted substance abuse counseling and provide a rationale. Lastly, discuss your thoughts about prevention initiatives and their effectiveness.

including, but not limited to, children, adolescents, adults; the
elderly; women; men; lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgendered (LGBT) people; people with disabilities; and different ethnic groups.
