Durkheim spends a lot of time discussing human nature, making important Ontological statements in relation to how education
is and should be. Write an response analyzing in detail Durkheim’s ontology and how those ontological statements allow him to build normative statements on education as a new moral institution that helps build social solidarity.

Educational Institutions are the modern alternative to religion as
a primary source of learning and socialization
School has a responsibility for a secular moral education
consistent with the needs of a given Division of labour
Criticized traditional authoritarian education as out of touch
Saw new realities required active learning and participation
Education needed to be coordinated with society for broad
cultural consensus
Durkheim Believed that education served many functions:
1) To reinforce social solidarity
Pledging allegiance: makes individuals feel part of a
group and therefore less likely to break rules.
2) To maintain social roles
School is a society in miniature: it has a similar
hierarchy, rules, expectations to the “outside world,”
and trains people to fulfill roles.
3) To maintain division of labor
School sorts students into skill groups, encouraging
students to take up employment in fields best suited
to their abilities.
