Weekly Objectives
Describe 3 physiological changes that occur during early adulthood
Identify at least 2 health screening tests important for people in the early adult stage.
Purpose
During Week 1, you learned about Healthy People 2030 and leading health indicators and objectives. We also talked about health promotion. As we have started our journey, we have looked at health promotion, nutrition and safety. Now in early adulthood, we continue looking at health promotion in terms of – Primary Prevention – trying to prevent yourself from getting a disease and Secondary Prevention – trying to detect a disease early and prevent it from getting worse – and barriers or reasons that young adults may not participate in physician visits, screenings, follow up appointments, etc. Finally, what can you do to help young adults overcome these barriers and keep them on the road to staying healthy?
Early adulthood is a very busy time and often young adults do not participate in health screening and/or annual appointments.
1. Provide 3 examples of specific age-appropriate health screening/health promotion available for young adults; include at least one example of a service for members of the LGBTQ community.
2. Then discuss at least 3 barriers (1 per example in #1) that young adults might face that lead them to avoid regular health screening and/or health appointments.
3. How can you as a healthcare professional help young adult patients overcome these barriers? Provide at least one suggestion for each reason previously noted.
