This week we have been learning about EcoCriticism.
Using either Hemingway’s short story “Hills Like White Elephants” , “Sonnet 18: Shall I Compare Thee to a Summer’s Day”, or Bishop’s poem “The Fish”, write a two-page analysis using the following guideline from Barry:
What Ecocritics Do (Barry)
Look for aspects of nature and how they affect the author, the narrator, the characters, and the readers
The aspects of nature Barry refers to include the following:
Ecocritics consider 4 levels of nature in literature
1. “wilderness”—uninhabited by humans
2. “scenic sublime”—natural scenes that may be visited by humans
3. “countryside”—humans live collaboratively with nature
4. “domestic picturesque”—humans have sculpted nature for aesthetic purposes
Your paragraphs should use formal academic English. Provide concrete support/evidence for your position. The same guidelines apply as used in Assignment 1 – I want a minimum of two-pages of your analysis – not quotes.
Choose from the following: (And make sure you check out the informational reviews for two of them in this week’s Module as well.)
“Hills Like White Elephants” (176)
“Sonnet 18: Shall I compare Thee to a Summer’s Day” (426)
“The Fish” (534)
