Research Assignment PTA 115
Name: Sohal Hallur
Citation: (AMA style)
Hallur SS, Brismée JM, Sizer PS, Dierick F, Dewan B, Thiry P, Sobczak S. Three-Dimensional Spinal
Position With And Without Manual Distraction Load Increases Spinal Height. J Manipulative
Physiological Therapeutics 2020;43;267-275.
Research Question and Hypothesis:
Research Question: The purpose of this study was to investigate if spinal height increases using 3-
dimensional (3-D) spinal position with and without manual distraction load and to assess the correlation
between spine height changes and degrees of trunk
Hypothesis: Spine height would increase in response to 3D spinal position with and without manual
distraction load and that degrees of trunk rotation would not correlate with spinal height changes.
Sample/Subject Information:
A sample of convenience of 56 students, staff and working people were recruited from local Universities
by way of posted notification or face-to-face classroom recruitment
Methods:
A pre-test post-test cross over design was used for the proposed study. Fifty-six healthy participants
were recruited from a convenience sample. Participants were randomly placed in one of two groups: (1)
3-D unloaded position with manual distraction load, and (2) without manual distraction load.
Participants’ spine was loaded with 4.5 kg bags on each shoulder before each intervention. Spinal height
was then measured before and after 3-D position with and without manual distraction load using a
stadiometer.
Independent/Dependent Variable:
Independent Variables (IV)
1. IV1: Loading Status
 Level 1 = Pre-intervention height
 Level 2 = Post-intervention height
2. IV2:3-D position
 Level 1 = without manual distraction load
 Level 2 = with manual distraction load
Dependent Variable:
Spine height measurement (mm)
Co-relation Variables:
1. Spine height change (mm)
2. Trunk rotation (degrees)
Type of Research (Qualitative or Quantitative): Explain your answer
Quantitative. This is an experimental research which collected spine height data in 3-D position with and
without manual traction to support or reject its hypothesis that spine height would increase in response
to 3D spinal position with and without manual distraction load and that degrees of trunk rotation would
not correlate with spinal height changes. The study employed a scientific research design of pre-test and
posttest and manipulated the independent variables of loading status and manual distraction load and
studied its effects on the dependent variable of spine height measurement.
Results:
3-D Unloaded position without manual distraction spine height increase: 5.69 mm
3-D Unloaded position with manual distraction spine height increase: 6.30 mm
There was no significant interaction effect between the two conditions, but spine height increased with
both conditions. No significant correlation was measured between trunk rotation and spine height
changes.
Conclusion:
Both 3-D unloaded positions with and without manual distraction load increased spinal height on
average by 6mm after a period of trunk loading. No significant difference was noted in spine height
changes between the two interventions. Clinicians may use either intervention to increase spine height
and maintain IVD health.
Limitations:
This study has limited external validity due to recruitment of participants aged 18 to 45 years. Only
healthy participants were recruited, and it was not known if any participants were diagnosed with IVD
degeneration.

Purpose:
Physical Therapists Assistants are required to disseminate research articles and help understand which physical therapy interventions are beneficial based on an underlying pathology. They are required to forward this information to the physical therapist to help patients achieve better functional outcomes. This assignment is designed to help you what different sections are present in a research article and what specific information is placed in those sections. Understanding of the information provided in the research article will allow the physical therapist assistant become a better consumer of research.

Objectives:
Understanding the various sections of a research article
Analyzing the information present in each section of the research article
Evaluating which part of the information present in different sections of the article is important to understand the research article
Task:
You are expected to use the library database and research one article that performs an experiment in the field of physical therapy. An experimental study is defined as a study that introduces an intervention and studies it on subjects. These studies randomize their selection of intervention and subjects and uses different groups. A control group is usually present in an experimental study. A study that exposes its subjects to all interventions is also an experimental study as the subjects themselves as act as a control group. EACH STUDENT WILL BE REQUIRED TO SHOW THE RESEARCH ARTICLE THEY HAVE PICKED FOR THE ASSIGNMENT TO DR. HALLUR AND GET IT APPROVED PRIOR TO USING IT FOR THE ASSIGNMENT.

After reading the study you will be asked to place the relevant information from the study in the blank template in the research assignment document that is linked here Research Assignment PTA 115_Blank_example.docx Download Research Assignment PTA 115_Blank_example.docx A completed example of the research assignment is linked here Research Assignment PTA 115_completed_example.docx Download Research Assignment PTA 115_completed_example.docx

Directions to complete the Assignment:

1) Each student will use the template present in the blank research assignment document linked above to complete the assignment

2) Each student will use American Medical Association (AMA) style for citing their research article they will use for the assignment. Directions on how to use AMA style of formatting for citation is loaded here Using-the-AMA-Style.pdf Download Using-the-AMA-Style.pdf

3) Each student will get pre-approval for the research article they will use for the assignment

4) Research assignment will not exceed 4 total pages. Each student will use 12 Times New Roman Font and keep the document single spaced.

5) The assignment will use proper English and will be free of spelling and grammatical errors.

6) Please be brief and concise while placing the information in the assignment. Do not copy paste all the information from the Abstract. I should be able to understand the research article after reading your research assignment without reading the article.

Criteria for Success:
Please refer to the rubric to understand how this assignment is graded. The study used to complete the example of research grid assignment provided here is linked here Hallur_Final_Research_publication.pdf Download Hallur_Final_Research_publication.pdf

Ungraded Feedback:
I will be providing ungraded feedback ONCE to all students until Tuesday, May 3, 2022. Ungraded feedback will not be provided to any assignments received after Tuesday, May 3, 2022. All students are welcome to submit a draft of their assignment and I will provide feedback using the rubric attached. Submission of the draft is for ungraded feedback is not mandatory but highly recommended.

DUE DATE: May 10, 2022

LATE SUBMISSION: You can submit the assignment late until Saturday, May, 14, 2022. Any assignments received between Tuesday, May 10, 2022 and Saturday, May 14, 2022 will automatically receive a grade of 75 if the score obtained on the rubric is above 75. If the score obtained on the rubric is below 75 that score will be retained. A Grade of 0 (ZERO) will be assigned to all assignments received after Saturday, May 14, 2022.
