Choose ONE of the following discussion

Option 1:
Some political scientists believe that elections are only useful in theory since an individual’s rational choice is heavily manipulated by factors such as the candidate’s personality and the mass media. Is it ok to have low voter turnout given that the average voter is not well-versed on candidates’ platforms and mostly just vote based on external factors? On the other side of the coin, might compulsory voting laws, requiring people to vote by law, be a good idea? Discuss what influence your decision would have on future elections.

Option 2:
It is proven that Americans vote much less often and in lower numbers than citizens in other parts of the developed world. What accounts for this lack of engagement in the political system? What effect could this have on democracy as a whole? Propose some changes that could boost voter participation in the United States.
