This semester you will have to submit an academic essay portfolio containing the
following elements:
1. an annotated bibliography of the academic essay,
2. an outline of the academic essay,
3. the academic essay.
1. Annotated bibliography:
The annotated bibliography should include 56 sources, at least three of which are
academic. Each bibliographic entry must have four parts:
bibliographic information about the source (e.g. author, title of the source, year
of publication, publisher),
summary of the source,
evaluation of the source,
information about how the source can be used in the academic essay.
2. Essay outline:
The essay outline should be a plan of your academic essay including the main points
along with any significant details. It can be either a topic outline (consisting of phrases
such as noun phrases, -ing phrases, infinitive phrases) or a sentence outline (consisting
of full sentences). Indicate the major divisions and subdivisions of the outline through
numbers or letters.
3. Academic essay:
Your academic essay should be of the argumentative type, that is, you have to write an
essay in which you argue a point, take a stance and support it with evidence.
The length of the essay is 9001000 words.Your essay should have the following elements:
introducing the issue/the topic of the essay,
providing background information,
adopting a stance/providing a thesis statement = your standpoint,
stating what analysis/discussion will be used,
presenting opposing points of view = counterclaims,
giving evidence that disproves the counterclaims = rebuttals,
presenting arguments in support of your own stance = supporting arguments,
summing up the main ideas of the essay.
The structure of the essay should follow the well-established three-part organization
(introduction, body and conclusion) and more specifically, the block pattern or the
point-by-point pattern.
In your academic essay you are expected to demonstrate the ability to use information
from outside sources and develop your own interpretation. Incorporate other scholars
ideas through quotation, paraphrase and summary in a way that sticks to academic
integrity and avoids plagiarism. Acknowledge your sources of information through intext citations and a reference list at the end of the essay. When formatting the citations,
choose the MLA or the APA style.
Throughout the essay your own voice as an academic writer should be clear and easy
to identify. You can express your own voice through declarative statements, signaling
words and expressions showing the relationships between the ideas you discuss and
evaluative statements.
Edit the essay carefully before submitting it. Check the essays main line of argument,
its structure, unity, coherence, style and language.
The essay must be typed. Please stick to Times New Roman 12 and 1.5 spacing.
