After reading all of The Handbook, attributed to Epictetus, choose a topic that he discusses, one that resonates with you as a thoughtful person and construct an essay that first depicts the philosopher’s ideas about the chosen topic and then follows up with testing the idea, by testing his assumptions, examining counter-arguments, considering implications. Topics such as how to deal with disability, health, personal appearance, reputation, loss, death, your position in life. After finding a topic write a personal essay that avails itself of personal anecdote but also draws directly from Epictetus and other Stoic writers as well as relevant secondary literature. Introduce quotations and characterizations in a simple manner. Use of the personal pronoun reference is allowed in this personal essay. Think of Epictetus as a person and write to him and to us as well in the 21st century.
