Essay 1 Assignment Prompt
So far in class, you have been introduced to several terms and concepts in the field of communication. Please answer the following questions in essay-format.
Part 1: Give an example from your personal life where communication failed. What happened? How/why did the communication fail? What happened as a result of the failure? Was there tension in a relationship? Did a relationship or opportunity end? Did your perception of someone or something change?
Part 2: If you could go back in time and alter the failed communication in your example above, how would you change it? Please consider how you could alter both your communication as well as the communication of the other person (or parties) involved.
Part 3: You have read a lot about perception. Describe for me how communication has shaped your personal sense of self. Do you find that the media, your family, your own expectations influence your personal identity and sense of self? What factor(s) play the biggest role in shaping your sense of self? Do you feel like you see yourself as others see you? Why or why not?
To get full credit for this assignment:
1. Hit the 750-1000 word count. Be sure to answer all parts of each question. Please write your essay as an essay (you don’t need to restate the questions or use headers to identify parts 1, 2 or 3).
2. Choose any 4-5 terms from the text and use them to support your answers. Be sure to state the term, define what it means, and then apply it to your example. Here is a tip: if you quote directly from the text and use quotation marks, be sure to also include the page number in your citation. No quotation marks, no page number needed.
3. Use APA formatting for your title page, in-text citations, and reference list. There are sample papers on Canvas in Module 2 that show you how to do this. There are also APA references on Canvas for you as well. APA is a big part of the grading requirements for this class, so please pay close attention to detail.
4. Save your essay as a PDF and upload it to Canvas
