3. How would you describe the difference between the investigative techniques of Poe’s Dupin and Chandler’s Marlowe? Is there a theory behind the approach of either? Is it systematic or sometimes random? How do they seek to bring order to what, at first, is a disorderly social world within which the crime has taken place? Is there a theory of “human nature” that is either articulated or implied? Feel free to do your own deductions based on the crimes, the suspects, the victims. How are their techniques different from the police?
