The fourth component of your course grade is to compose an essay after reading Gang Leader for a Day. The essay will be 1,000 words in length (2-3 pages with 12 pt. standard font and 1” margins). Read the entire book and then compose a paper answering the following points:
1. provide a concise summary of the book. You don’t have to stress over each character’s name, but give enough detail about the entire book so that someone who hasn’t read the book will be able to know what it is about.
2. connect the book with 2-3 topics that were covered in this course. You will need to provide specific examples from the reader, including page numbers, as well as specific references to the textbook or videos. This should comprise the bulk of your paper. I expect you to quote and cite from both the reader and the textbook.
3. finally, provide a short opinion statement on the book. Don’t just tell me if you liked it or didn’t, but if you found it useful for this course and understanding of sociology, etc. This section should be the shortest section of your paper.
A successful written response will include a strong theory or point of view which the student must convey to his/her audience. The topic will be explored through several sub-themes or statements, which the student will develop and define through adequate research. Finally, the completed topic should reveal some degree of personal opinion, either one’s stance on an issue, or reflect a change in opinion on a topic due to the discussions in this course.
