essay that compares and contrasts the use humor and, particularly, the word “joke” in “The Gun Joke” and “The Rape Joke.”

Your essay should ultimately argue that humor in both poems is essential to their power and poignancy. Make sure to refer to relevant examples and to incorporate correctly formatted direct quotes that support your points.

Length: 1400-1600 words. Make sure to meet/stay within the allotted word count.
Format: Always use standard MLA style. This includes proper heading, title, font, spacing, and correct quoting practices.
Remember to cite works of poetry and drama properly. This includes referencing to line numbers.

Each of your body paragraphs should make a main point that supports the thesis statement.
The first sentence in each paragraph should be a topic sentence. This sentence speaks directly to the thesis statement and introduces the topic of the paragraph.
Each paragraph should contain at least two direct quotes.
Every point you make in your body paragraphs need to be supported by direct evidence from the poems. This will come in the form of specific examples and summary as well as correctly formatted direct quotes that you use to emphasis your points. Read/watch the following about supporting your points and how to incorporate direct quotes, summary, and paraphrase:
* You need to grab the attention and interest of the reader
* You need to provide context for the discussion that will take place/introduce the subject
* You need to stay away from the use of the “I” and expressions like, “this essay will show” or “I am going to demonstrate” (we call this “signposting” and it’s important to avoid).
* Set up the essay with a thesis statement that comes in one or two sentences of the end of the first paragraph. Your thesis statement is where you, in a strong direct statement, write the argument (main point) that the essay is making. Keep in mind that in theory someone should be able to disagree with your thesis. (Note that your thesis might change over the course of the writing process.)
