Ethical Analysis of Criminal Justice
Practice
AN ETHICAL ANALYSIS OF CRIMINAL JUSTICE PRACTICE
(SEE HERE FOR ADDITIONAL GUIDANCE
ON THIS ASSIGNMENT) IMPORTANT: look
VLC in attachments. Walk you through the assignment, step-by-step.
For this analysis, you will IDENTIFY
AND REFLECT on an ethical challenge common to contemporary criminal justice
systems. This assignment is designed to develop your moral reasoning and
analytical skills via the critical assessment of the complex ethical issues
embedded in criminal justice practice and the identification of the
multifaceted consequences stemming from ethical violations.
PICK AN ISSUE RELATED TO CRIMINAL JUSTICE PRACTICE THAT YOU ARE INTERESTED IN AND FIND
A RECENT (within the last 5 years) piece of media coverage directly RELATED to the issue.
When selecting a STORY TO ANALYZE, be SURE to choose a piece that
thoroughly explains the issue, identifies the actors involved, and addresses
the events that took place. As you reflect on the controversy, consider the
ethical dilemma at the heart of the issue and identify how this dilemma relates
to the concepts and ideas raised in class and presented in COURSE READINGS.
You will analyze the article by
exploring its argument or perspective and presenting your own argument about
the practice issue in focus.
IN 4 PAGES, analyze the criminal justice
practice-related issue that you chose for this assignment:
·
Begin by introducing the issue that you’ve chosen to explore,
and briefly summarizing the story presented in the article you selected. This is not as easy as it may sound: You don’t want to be too
detailed or your paper will be all summary and will leave you little room for
your analysis. However, you don’t want to leave out important details necessary
for your analysis.
·
After briefly summarizing the issue, your paper
should focus on an analysis of the ethical dilemma presented in the article. Discuss the article, other ideas about the topic you have
learned in class, and your own ideas regarding the topic. To analyze something
means to break it down into simpler parts, examine the parts themselves as well
as how they fit together to form the larger construct, and then to give an
evaluation of the whole based on this examination.
To complete your analysis, be
sure to:
§ Identify the facts, values, and concepts.
§ Identify the moral dilemmas for
the primary parties involved: What are the underlying
moral values at play here?
§ Identify the largest ethical
question facing these parties: What choices are being
made? What actions/outcomes would each of the primary ethical
perspectives prescribe?
§ Weigh in with your take on
the ethical dilemma: Explain your perspective by using either a teleological or
deontological ethical perspective. You must FULLY explain AND apply the
perspective.
§ Discuss the consequences of the
events for various related parties (including those
involved, the community, the broader society, AND the criminal justice
system/practice of criminal justice)
Ethical Analysis Assignment Requirements:
·
When explaining ethical issues and perspectives, explain them

ETHICAL
ANALYSIS OF CRIMINAL JUSTICE PRACTICE: ADDITIONAL ASSIGNMENT GUIDANCE
Because this
is one of the more difficult assignments in this course, I’m sharing additional
guidance that you may find helpful as you complete the assignment (see below).
Be sure to check out the assignment for full details and please check with me
if there’s anything you’re not sure about.
When I
taught this class previously, I went ahead and made a little overview video
with a full explanation that outlines exactly what I’m looking for by using the
example of U.S. Attorney General Bill Barr’s decision not to bring charges in
the Eric Garner case.
In the video, I use this example and walk
through the various pieces of the assignment, step by step, as a way to explain
exactly what YOU need to do in your own assignment. I know that other students
found this overview to be helpful, so I thought I’d go ahead and share it (and
the relevant news stories that inform my comments) with you–just let me know
if you have any questions or if I can clarify anything.
