The importance of legal and ethical precepts cannot be overlooked in daily nursing practice and is especially vital in nursing research of any type. A registered nurse practices following the ANA Code of Ethics for Professional Nursing Practice Links to an external site.; this is a non-negotiable aspect of being a part of the nursing profession. In nursing research, the nursing actions require an even more specialized consideration in addition to the code of ethics. This oversight is usually provided by an Institutional Review Board (IRB) or committee within a given organization. This board is responsible for many actions, but their primary reason for being is to ensure that any human participants in research are protected and that certain steps are followed specifically to ensure this safety. The IRB pays special diligence in regards to “vulnerable populations” which include children, the elderly, developmentally disabled persons, prisoners, and minorities.
