Ethics and Information Technology

There are three prompts. You can choose any of these three and write an essay about one topic. It has to be entirely MLA and most of it should be your words instead of citations. Only use some citations. It is a philosophy and ethics on technology paper.

In his classic paper, “What is Computer Ethics?” James Moor introduces the concept of a
“policy vacuum”. Explain what he means by this concept and the role it plays in his
argument for the importance of computer ethics as a discipline. How does it relate to
other concepts he introduces, such as “logical malleability” and “conceptual muddles”?
Do you find the idea of a policy vacuum to be a helpful concept for analyzing issues in
ethics and information technology? Is Moor’s argument convincing? Support your
argument with examples of your own.

2. Think of a recent moral issue related to information technology. Some examples you may
consider are digital piracy, big data and privacy, hacktivism, etc. Briefly explain the issue
and the problems involved, then examine the issue through the lens of any two of the
ethical theories we’ve discussed (rule/ act utilitarianism, rule/ act deontology, virtue
ethics, consequentialism, or contractarianism). Of the two theories you chose, which one
seems more helpful in resolving the particular issue at hand? Why?

3. Choose a privacy scandal associated with information technology (e.g., any of the
Facebook scandals, Snowden’s revelations about the NSA, targeted advertising, etc.) and
explain why it was a violation of privacy, using either Moor’s comprehensive approach
or Nissenbaum’s contextual integrity approach to privacy. Propose a potential solution to
prevent similar scandals from happening in the future. Make sure you describe the case,
the theory you’re applying, and why you think your potential solution would be effective.
