Begin with Berry’s essay as a way to frame your discussion. Pay
particular attention to Berry’s two questions and how he interprets texts. Move
on to Levine’s lecture for a biblical scholar’s perspective on Jesus.
Matthew chapters 5 – 7 are Jesus’s “Sermon on the
Mount,” the longest and most specific account of his ethics in the New
Testament. A parallel version, known as the “Sermon on the Plain,” is
found in Luke chapter 6. The SOM worksheet is worth a look.
Jesus’s “Parable of the Good Samaritan” is found in
Luke chapter 10. This is one of the most influential of Jesus’s texts and it is
the subject of much reflection. Read the essays of King, Levine, and Rule as
examples of how the parable has been interpreted in the past and provide your
own interpretation of the text.
The assignment calls for you to critically interpret and analyze
the ethics of Jesus. As this is the academic study of religion, focus
on what the text says and what kind of ethical stance Jesus
calls his disciples to embrace. Your personal beliefs, or lack thereof, should
be only an intangible part of your response.
