Assignment #3: Ethnographic Interviews
The purpose of this
assignment is to develop listening and interviewing skills. Students are to
conduct ethnographic interviews on investigating the spread of Islam among
the Turkana People of Northern Kenya
Stage One: (Interviewing process) Write a 4-page paper
double-spaced
Read
through Spradley (1979) about the descriptive questions. Read carefully
the 5 types of descriptive questions.
Conduct
and record ethnographic interviews with at least 2 informants and use the
descriptive questions outlined in Spradley pg. 85-91.
Transcribe
the interview.
Send
the transcription and translation together with the interview guide
questions, which should be based on the research questions.
Stage Two: (Writing
up)
Write a 4-page paper
double-spaced and include the following 2 sections:
Emic description
-Describe as comprehensively as possible (but keep in mind
the number of pages of your write up) what your informants have told you about
the topic you are studying.
-Use direct quotes from your interview to support your emic
description. Do not overuse direct quotes; decide how many quotes you want to
include in your paper.
Etic analysis
-Interpret and analyze the description above from a
theological or missiological perspective.
Write a paragraph or two
about your experience as an interviewer: include some strength, weaknesses
you might have realized during the interviewing process. What assumptions
or preconceptions did you find that might have interfered with your
interview process? How can you improve on this?
