PREFACE
This will be your intro to get readers into the project. You can make this a general opening about music, describe what you are trying to do for the ethnographic study, or “set the scene” for readers. Imagine an audience of readers outside of our class.
BACKGROUND
Explain how you know this person and why you chose to interview them. This can be a narrative/ story or a description of what they are like.
DATA/ANALYSIS (“The Mixtape”)
Discuss at least three songs, one-by-one, identified by your interviewee. You can include more than three songs. You’ll want to include what your interviewee says about the songs and also offer background information on the song, artist, and the context of when it came out (which may call for a bit of research on your part). Be sure to cite any sources used in APA format (something new we are practicing for this assignment).
REFLECTION/CONCLUSION
Offer your readers a reflection that discusses the take-aways from your project. These kinds of questions might help: What insights did you gain? What’s worth noticing about the ways music has played a part in this person’s life? What insights does your project give to help understand someone from a different generation (or a different place, cultural context, etc.)? Does this project help you see, through music, what life was like in a way that’s outside for your own time/place/cultural moment?
WORKS CITED
Be sure to cite all sources used in the project in APA format (7th edition). This includes the music and any other things you looked up or quoted from. The interview does not have to be cited in APA style. Look closely at the APA formatting resources in our Module since it is quite different from MLA. This assignment will give you practice with APA style – something that you will definitely encounter as you continue your educational pathway.
3 songs are required
