In general, society at large tends to lack empathy for illicit drug user. Name some reasons that illicit drug use is stigmatized, compared to people diagnosed with alcoholism, cancer, diabetes, and high blood pressure, etc. are not judged in the same manner?

1)The medical model aligns with my beliefs and thoughts on addiction. Yes addiction is a choice for an individual to use drugs, but it is abnormal for individuals to crave them constantly. Simply put, the medical model of addiction states that alcoholism is a disease of the brain. Like any other disease, if it is not treated, fatal consequences can occur.

2) One reason drug use stigmatized is because a person with addiction is considered criminally dangerous. Many stories out here can back this up because individuals can be dangerous when they’re under the influence of drugs. Another reason drug use is stigmatized is because many believe drug users are morally depraved. It is often believed that illicit drug users lack morals and good character. Those diagnosed with cancer, diabetes, and high blood pressure are not judged in the same manner as addicts is because addiction is seen as a controllable behavior (for the most part). Individuals can be born with cancer, diabetes, and high blood pressure or develop them over time due to being exposed to unhealthy lifestyles in adulthood and childhood.

3) To me prediction is a choice unless you’re born with drugs and your system. People decide to use for different reasons. Some use to mask pain, peer pressure, or just to have fun. All of these are choices.

4) After watching the videos and reading the text, I noticed the video showed the same thing as the book only shorter. Both the video and the book showed how each addiction model helps one understand addiction, but the video gave examples. For instance the psychological model focuses on coping skills. In the video this is broken down by giving examples of coping skills.

1.The two theories that are closer to my view on addiction is the Behavioral and Sociocultural. As a young girl growing up there was alcohol in the household. We were taught that alcohol was for the adults. There was no drinking in the home all day every day. Only for special occasions such as Cookouts, card parties, Thanksgiving and Christmas. I was about twelve years old, and my uncle asked me did I want to try what he was drinking and out of curiosity I tried it. It was the worst stuff I ever tasted, and it burned going down my throat. I asked my uncle what he was drinking, and he said bourbon. From that moment on It turned me away from drinking. Even as I was approaching the drinking age of consent my girls would say now, we can go out and have a drink. I told them they can, but I was not interested. I was the dancer of the group. Two members of my family have died from liver cirrhosis. My uncle would come over for the holidays and he would have one drink after another. A couple of times he was rushed to the hospital and was told if he did not stop drinking, he would die. Not too long after the last visit to the hospital he died. My sister, brother and I would visit my uncle over the summer. My uncle and aunt would have friends over constantly and they would have drinks. I noticed my cousins were experimenting with alcohol. They seemed to enjoy it. Later in life they all had problems with alcoholism. I remember the last time I saw my cousin she had gotten so thin. She would walk around either with a cup in her hand or a flask. I did not see her eat the entire day. I asked her did she want something to eat, and she said no. I made the plate anyway and she took a few bites. Probably and month later she was rushed to the hospital where is slipped in a coma and never regained consciousness. The family tried to help them both but until they wanted the help there was nothing we could do. Being around and socializing with people using certain substances can influence you negatively or positively. I feel it depends on the individual.

Illicit drug use is stigmatized because society feels like it is a choice. An excuse for people to be unproductive members of society. Illicit drugs are illegal and the criminal activity that come along with it.
3.In the beginning it may be a choice or an experiment. It has to start somewhere for whatever reason. I feel it affects people differently. The tolerance of one’s body to the drug. Are the cravings so bad that they cannot stop? For instance, a mother smokes crack while she is pregnant, and the baby becomes addicted. That baby didn’t have a choice. I really can’t judge without knowing the full circumstances.

4.The book and video had the same content. The video showed graphics and the breakdown of the theories were easier to understand. Being a visual learner helped me connect the points.
