Evaluate how theme and text are influenced by historical, sociopolitical, and cultural contexts, including cultural norms and values.

To begin, choose one of the following five themes explored in the course:

* Traditions (religion, folklore, community traditions and customs, festivals or holidays, coming-of-age traditions, etc.)
* Working Lives (occupations, economic considerations, social class, wealth vs. poverty, etc.)
* Family and Gender Roles (domestic themes and issues, marriage, roles of men and women, gender identity, generations—youth vs. age, etc.)
* Ethnicity (race or ethnic groups, racial identity, discrimination, self vs. “other,” colonizer vs. colonized, borders and migrations, power dynamics, etc.)
* Environment (landscape and topography; how landscape influences identity and culture; environmental issues—deforestation, pollutions, global climate change, preservation of the land or environment, etc.)
In your final paper, discuss how your chosen theme is explored in at least two works from different writers read during the course and in at least one non-literary work (e.g., painting, sculpture, mixed media, music, dance, film, graphic novel, etc.; you may choose a non-literary work of your own that was not discussed in the course). You must integrate a minimum of three scholarly sources into your discussion.
