Women are portrayed pessimistic and troublesome symbols, while men are known for being strong and controlling. The ancient Greeks perceived courage, intelligence, independence, and loyalty as manly characteristics. When exhibited such traits, they were labeled masculine. In traditional Athenian thought, women who took bold and decisive action could be viewed as disruptive to society and to nature as well.

There are certain groups of females that have broken these norms. One in particular are the Amazonians. Their legends and history challenged the male-dominated establishment and planted seeds of rebellion in the minds of their women. This demonstrates the harsh reality of women in Greek society. Although Oeconomicus described the life of a wealthy woman, it still reflects the ideals of Greek society. A Greek housewife ran all aspects of her home. She supervised slaves and servants and cared for them when they were sick. She provided people with properly stored and prepared food and drinks. She was usually the family member who kept up with religious observances, and she managed the household accounts. She was also responsible for the family’s clothing, including making and mending it.
