The World Wide Web houses an immense amount of information. Some information is great, and some are not so great. Because there is a wealth of resources available to both educators and patients, it is important to candidly evaluate the content of web pages and recognize how to help patients identify valid and reliable information.
In this assignment, you will:
Find two (2) health-related websites. You’ll note that in the sample that is provided, the American Lung Association site is used. The poor website choice should be an actual health-related site. Avoid sites like Wikipedia where a health topic is discussed. Wikipedia is an encyclopedic site, rather than a health-related site.
One website should have good, verifiable information, while the other should be suspect in terms of validity.
Using the five criteria (Accuracy, Design, Author, Currency, and Authority) from Bastable, 2019 (page 565) and all of the bullet points associated with each criterion, you will use a screen capture program to capture images from two separate health-related web pages and annotate them using the annotation tools. Your annotations will allow you to highlight each criterion and its associated bulleted questions on the web page you are evaluating. You may need or choose to use several images and slides to clearly show whether each criterion is met.
Please address every bulleted question for each criterion for full points.

After evaluating each website, you may find that your initial assessment of the site either being credible or not changes based on the evaluation using the bullet points in each criterion. This is ok as long as you express this change of thought in the conclusion slide and explain why you changed your mind.
Jing, Techsmith, or other screen capture programs (Mac and Windows both have screen capture capabilities) are computer software programs used to capture images or movies by recording your computer screen. If unable to use Jing or Techsmith, once the screen capture is placed in a PowerPoint slide, annotation can be performed using the tools within PowerPoint.

Include as many screen-captured images that are needed to demonstrate every bulleted question for each of the five criteria.

What should I avoid doing?
If using Jing or Techsmith, do not save your images to “Screencast”, but select “save as file only” BUT,
Do save your images as .png (picture) files to your computer then insert them into your slides.
How will I be evaluated for this assignment?
In the second chapter of this book display, you will find a sample assignment image, and in the third chapter, there is a rubric. The rubric details the grading for each area of the assignment. (attached)
The assignment this week will also take a look at evaluating websites that could be good resources for patient education. As we all know, there are a multitude of websites, some that are credible, and others are not. We should be careful in guiding our patients to websites to assure they meet the criteria of a credible and trustworthy site. There are several tools available to help in this evaluation. Chapter 13 provides a chart with criteria including looking at the accuracy, design, author, currency, and authority of the website. Additionally, other sources utilize the CRAAP acronym criteria which look at the currency, relevance, authority, accuracy, and purpose of the website to determine its credibility (Welch Medical Library, 2020). The following website from Benedictine University (2021) provides important questions to ask when using the CRAAP tool: https://researchguides.ben.edu/source-evaluation . Finally, Bastable briefly touches on the Health on the Net (HON) Foundation criteria as another tool to identify credible health-related websites. The HONcode has eight established standards by which it evaluates health-related websites. These include:
1. Authoritative – what are the qualifications of the authors?
2. Complementarity – does the site support and not replace the doctor-patient relationship?
3. Privacy – does the site respect and protect the privacy and confidentiality of personal data submitted to the site by the user?
4. Attribution – does the site cite its sources of published information, and date medical and health pages?
5. Justifiable – does the site back up its claims related to the benefits and performance of its information?
6. Transparency – does the site provide accessible presentations and provide accurate email contacts?
7. Financial disclosure – does the site identify its funding sources?
8. Advertising policy – does the site clearly distinguish ads from editorial content?

Although the assignment for this week is focused on using the criteria from Chapter 13 of the Bastable textbook, you can see some similarities between all three tools. You may find this extra information helpful and can certainly also discuss whether the websites you choose to evaluate for the assignment have the HON Code of credibility. Tech Smith’s Capture is a free web-based program that allows you to capture images and annotate them with a variety of tools. You can also capture short videos that show each click of your mouse, as well as record your voice.
You will be using Tech Smith’s capture or any other screen capture including the screen capture within your computer, with the ability to annotate (in TechSmith Capture or directly in PowerPoint) for your website evaluation assignment. This practice exercise will help you learn how to use screen capture and annotation before the assignment is due. The software is free and is safe to download to your computer. There are versions for Windows PC and MAC computers.
The Tech Smith website has a variety of great tools that will show you how to work with Capture. You’ll find links below for an overview as well as a link that will give you step-by-step instructions on what to do.
Follow these instructions to download the screen capture app.
1. Proceed to the TechSmith website (creator of Jing)
2. Click on the version you need (MAC or Windows) and follow the steps to install the program
3. Review the tutorials (TechSmith Capture Image Help) that will show you the specifics of capturing an image and annotating it.
IMPORTANT FOR MAC users:
There may be some compatibility issues using Tech Smith Capture with Mac, especially with the newer versions of the Mac operating system.
If you experience any issues with Tech Smith Capture, please capture your images using screenshot (command/shift/4 and move the cursor that appears to highlight the section of the screen you want to capture).
You should be able to find the screenshot by going to finder and looking in your “Recents” folder.
You can then annotate using the tools in PowerPoint.
