Examine how a way of life characterized by individualism, materialism, a
belief in the Hong Kong Dream, and a distinctive Hong Kong identity,
were developed in the specific context of colonial Hong Kong. Also,
examine how socioeconomic and political changes explain the rise of an
alternative set of values, beliefs and social/ political demands, and to
what extent the meanings of Hong Kong identity have been subject to
reconstruction.

****This question builds on the knowledge from Units 1, 2 and 3
and requires you to go through Unit 4 carefully to examine the
historical
development of Hong Kong society from the perspective of culture and
identity.
To answer this question, you should
have a solid grasp of how
sociologists understand ‘culture’ (pp. 3–5, 9–10); how it can be
understood as subject to constant
construction and re-construction; and
how it serves as the foundation for the construction of ‘identity’ (i.e. a
sense of the
distinctiveness or uniqueness of oneself and/or one’s
community) (pp. 47–48, 48–51).
On this basis, you are expected to delineate the values, beliefs and way of
life that characterize the ‘Hong Kong Experience’ and its ethos
developed in colonial Hong Kong — namely its individualism,
materialism and faith in the Hong Kong Dream (i.e. faith in competitive
individualism and an abundance of opportunities for the pursuit of
success) (pp. 11–14, 15–17, 21–25). At the same time, you are expected
to demonstrate how these serve as the foundation for the development of
Hong Kong identity (pp. 28–30).****
