whether there are any outliers you should omit from your analysis. I have highlighted in yellow two entries that
seem candidates for outliers to me, but there may be others. Sort the data by
tree species and then diameter (smallest to largest). Be extremely careful when sorting as it is
easy to scramble your data if you don’t select your data perfectly. Use the
sorted data to fill out the spreadsheet that counts the number of trees of each
species in various size-class categories (Size
Class Structure). Note that there is
a tab for each of the 4 species. While
you can do the counts manually, an easier way is to use the “countif” function
in excel to count the number of trees that fall between the endpoints of the
size class. Use the Data Analysis Toolpak in Excel (it’s a free option
installation if you don’t already have it) to produce summary statistics for
the diameters of each of the 4 tree species individually and display them in a
table that includes sample size, mean diameter at breast height (dbh), standard
deviation, and range (min-max) for each species. Create the table on a new tab in the Size
Class Structure spreadsheet. For each of the 4 tree species separately, use
Excel’s graphing capability to produce a diagram that reflects the number of
individual trees in each age class (you will have 4 diagrams when complete). Make these diagrams new tabs in your Size
Class Structure spreadsheet. Label them.
