Final Project: Students will be required to write a paper that will focus on an analysis of an organizational problem. The organizational problem should be viewed as a gap between the expectations for organizational performance and actual organizational performance. It should be one that reoccurs, that seems to defy a permanent solution and that poses issues that are difficult to discuss openly and honestly, and has a social justice/equity dimension.The paper should present an accumulation of thought about how the frames intertwine when addressing the issue. This paper should discuss students’ perceptions of the implication of the frames for educational leaders seeking greater equity for all students, families, and communities. The paper must include a review of literature section, beyond that required for the course by adding 2-4 additional sources that address the equity dimensions of the problem of practice (PoP), and demonstrate their pertinence to the issue being addressed in the paper. In each case, the student will identify articles in order to approach the task in a scholarly manner. All document headings, formats, citations, and references MUST be in APA style. If you do not already own the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (6th ed), you
need to get one or understand how to use on-line APA resources very well. (I recommend OWL sponsored by Purdue University). Graduate coursework will consistently have APA accuracy as an expectation.
Frame #1: Structural Analysis: Draw on the readings and your experience to describe a) how the problem might be analyzed from the structural perspective, b) what the structural perspective may contribute to an understanding of the root causes of the problem and to the development of strategies for addressing the problem, and c) how does the structural frame perspective contribute to the development, articulation, implementation, and stewardship of an organizational vision in ways that address the problem. In this section, it will be important to consider the ways in which organizational structures, policies, and practices are adding to the inequities in educational outcomes that are at the heart of your chosen PoP.
Frame #2: Human Resources Analysis: Draw on the readings and your experience to describe a) how the problem might be analyzed from the human resources perspective, b) what the human resources perspective may contribute to an understanding of the root causes of the problem and to the development of strategies for addressing the problem, and c) how does the human resources frame perspective contribute to the development, articulation, implementation, and stewardship of an organizational vision in ways that address the problem. In this section, it will be important to consider the ways in which organizational policies, practices, and professional dispositions for hiring and then supporting staff, students, families, and communities are adding to the inequities in educational outcomes that are at the heart of your chosen PoP.
Frame #3: Political Analysis: Draw on the readings and your experience to describe a) how the
problem might be analyzed from the political perspective, b) what the political perspective may
contribute to an understanding of the root causes of the problem and to the development of
strategies for addressing the problem, and c) how does the political frame perspective contribute to the development, articulation, implementation, and stewardship of an organizational vision in ways that address the problem. In this section, it will be important to consider the ways in which organizational and community politics are adding to the inequities in educational outcomes that are at the heart of your chosen PoP.
Frame #4: Symbolic/Cultural Analysis: Draw on the readings and your experience to describe a)
how the problem might be analyzed from the symbolic/cultural perspective, b) what the
symbolic/cultural perspective may contribute to an understanding of the root causes of the
problem and to the development of strategies for addressing the problem, and c) how does the
symbolic/cultural frame perspective contribute to the development, articulation, implementation,
and stewardship of an organizational vision in ways that address the problem. In this section, it
will be important to consider the ways in which organizational and community culture are adding
to the inequities in educational outcomes that are at the heart of your chosen PoP.
All papers will be assessed in relationship to the student’s demonstrated understanding of and ability to utilize the frames in the analysis of a particular leadership challenge that they confront in their work, and in their ability to express clear thoughts about the issue.
