Executive Report

For the rest of this class, you will be creating communications for a project that you define. The project should be a situation that requires research, identifying a problem, and creating a solution. A good example of a situation is the plastic bag case study we have used throughout this class. For your project, you should not focus on plastic bags as this is already being used in the class.

The chapter on “Project Management Basics” will help you with creating your own project.

You are welcome to focus upon a situation at work, or that you plan to do at work. You can identify a situation in your community that interests you. If you do not have a situation at work, you can make one up.

There are four components to this project:
M4: Write a report – instructions are below
M5: Write a proposal based upon the report
M6: Create a presentation
M7: Put the project together – revise M4, M5, & M6 assignments and add two new communications that pull everything together.

Within M4-7, you will find the instructions for each assignment. Each assignment is meant to build upon the other. I recommend that you choose a situation/issue/problem that you find very interesting as you will be working on this topic for the remainder of the course.

Report Assignment Write a formal report with an executive summary. You can email your professor to confirm your topic should you wish.

Here are the report requirements:
Choose a type of formal report – either analytical or information
See your text for explanations regarding the differences
Length is 4-5 pages including the executive summary
Include title page and citation page (not part of the written report page count)
Label the executive summary and report sections
Include 1-2 small visuals, label and cite these
Use the APA style guide for citations and references
Use 1” margins (do not use any margin larger than 1”)
Double-space
Use 12-point font
Typical fonts used are Arial and Times New Roman

There are 2 parts to this assignment:
1. One situational analysis, filling out the situational analysis worksheet from your course text. The situational analysis is your planning document for the next part, the actual communication. Note: the situational analysis is critical as it will help shape the writing of your report.

2. One formal report with an executive summary. Make sure that your report includes all report sections appropriate for your context, and that it is appropriate for the communication variables you noted in your situational analysis.
