Task description: Critical Analysis of the Experience of Disability.
In this task you will be examining the lived experience of disability through reading about Mena and her
family. Reflecting on one of Mena’s life stages described in the book, discuss the environmental barriers
and facilitators to Mena living an ordinary life and how her life chances contributed to her lived experience.
1. Before reading this book – reflect on what you consider to be the main challenges for people with a
disability, giving consideration to each area of the environment.
2. Read “The Shouted Goodbye” by Jeremy Ward (2015). Available in the library or can be downloaded from https://www.boolarongpress.com.au/product/the-shouted-goodbye/
3. Reflect on one of Mena’s life stages described in this book and discuss the environmental barriers
and facilitators to Mena living an ordinary life.
4. Discuss how Mena’s life chances/ opportunities (e.g. parent’s educational level, financial resources
etc.) contributed to her lived experience.
