Using Ayn Rand’s excerpts as the main launching pad, explain her brand of ethical egoism.
Why does she think that selfishness has unfairly received a bad reputation? What are her
main criticisms of altruism? How does she wield certain narratives to defend her stance?
What are some of the standard objections against her position? Do you think her defense of
ethical egoism is convincing? Why or why not? (make sure to read sections of Rand’s “The
Virtue of Selfishness” and if you have time, watch her interview with Mike Wallace on

Online Ethics —Session II, Spring 2023
Midterm Paper Topics
A 4-5 page, double spaced and typed paper on one of the following topics. In each, you are
asked to state and explain the theory in question or the particular author’s views on the
subject. You are also asked to spend at least one of the pages explaining and defending
your own position on the matter. Consult the writing tips for how to write philosophy
papers. Accuracy, clarity, and evidence of careful thinking, as well as the cogency of your
position are the crucial features in these essays.
Only Word or rtf documents accepted. Do not send pdf, pages, google docs or links, or
documents in other formats. Converting documents is cumbersome and time consuming.
Please appreciate that I would prefer to read and provide feedback on your papers rather
than converting files, or asking you to resubmit documents.
Due date
Monday, April 10 (by 6pm). Drafts accepted up to Thursday, April 6 by 6 p.m. While I can be
somewhat flexible with regard to the submission of the final version if your circumstances
this semester warrant it, I cannot accept drafts after the deadline
