In this assignment, you will assess your own community and describe where and how public health agencies work with emergency medical services (EMS) and the fire department. Research what public health entities are present in your location, or which public health entities would be available to your area if you do not have one.
The following is a good example of possible departments that may be involved with decision-making in your community concerning disaster management. Your community will probably include similar but different organizations:
emergency management operations,
state health department, and
city public health department.
Research your community, and create a list of departments and their functions that will be responsible for decision-making in your community if a disaster occurs. Also remember that outside agencies may also be involved in a disaster scenario. It can be helpful to locate a community preparedness plan that includes information concerning disaster management and preparation.
Once you have determined which agencies are responsible, discuss how the agencies interact with local emergency medical services (EMS) and the fire department. The community preparedness plan can assist you in knowing if the different agencies understand the process at the time of a disaster. Does the community preparedness plan:
promote coordination and integration,
communicate the plan between agencies,
establish a leadership chain,
collaborate with community leaders from all sectors,
explain emergency management roles and responsibilities,
detail who is responsible for carrying out specific actions, and
include reporting authorities?
Use your own knowledge, experience, and the community preparedness plan to help you assess where and how public health agencies work with emergency medical services (EMS) and the fire department.
If your community does not have a preparedness plan, then discuss how one could be of value to the community.
You do not need to show specific examples such as incidents or emergencies, but you should show the relationship (positive or negative) between the various agencies if possible.
Your paper should be at least two pages, not counting the title and references pages and include at least two outside references. Please adhere to APA Style when creating a title page, citations, and references for this assignment. APA formatting, however, is not necessary.
