Explain how abolitionism came in many forms, but the undergirding goal of any true abolitionist was the ultimate freedom of enslaved African-Americans. Abolitionism includes many forms like leading African-Americans from labor camps to free states and territories in the U.S., Canada & Mexico, or educating African-Americans despite the law, or destroying white Americans property like ships, land and weaponry that allowed enslavers to maintain chattel slavery.
The 19th-century Abolitionist Movement had one overarching goal: to end chattel slavery. How people sought to achieve it, their vision for society after the abolishment, the demands for abolition, and simultaneous rights varied from person to person, activist to activist, and were most stark when comparing White-American abolitionists to African-American abolitionists. You are to research your assigned abolitionist person. Learn about their background, who they were, where they came from, and what they were trying to achieve. Consider how various historians have written about these figures – do you agree with their analysis and conclusions? Then, you will write a paper where you identify three ways your abolitionist sought to achieve abolition and how they fit into the abolitionist narrative and ideas mentioned above.
