—Follow the project overview to begin to use the Porter checklist/handout questions to give an overview of the audience of the academic journal.
Upload the current draft (MS word file) as outlined in the project overview. I’d like to see an working Introduction, Journal Overview, and Article Summary section (which you should already have).
Most of the focus for this pre-draft should be on the Journal Overview section (using Porter’s checklist to gather your information 1-2 pages. See project outline).
Use the checklist questions to gather your data but write the overview that gives readers overview of the audience of the academic journal. In short, who reads this journal and how do you know.
Then, have the brief article summary section.
Also, have the beginnings of the Article Analysis (Bazerman)
Reflection: You may also use the text box to discuss the Porter and Bazerman Checklists (withing the text box) asking what specific concerns arise with the checklist? What concerns do you have about understanding the audience of your journal and the writing conventions/expectations found in your sample article?
–Analysis of Writing Expectations
(5 pgs) Here you use the sample article from the journal to analyze how this community writes (what are the conventions and/or expectations?).
Most of the Bazerman checklist will help to gather information about what this audience values and expects in its writing. Be sure not to engage the content of the article or discuss the topic. You’re using the article as a sample to analyze writing expectations. Look at how they write, not necessarily what it is they’re writing.
Here are some basic steps to consider when discussing the evidence about the writing expectations of the article. (and should be considered with most types of academic analysis):
1. Have a claim
2. Show examples/evidence supporting the claim
3. Explain how and why the evidence/examples supports the claim. Explaining how/why is an essential step here.
4. Tie the analysis back to the overall claim/thesis of the project.
