Gerrymandering or geography? Explain how Democrats won the popular vote but lost the Congress in 2012.
Throughout the semester, you must complete three memos discussing the readings of a class
period. You can choose any three weeks you like, with two caveats: only ten students can hand in a memo per day and at least one memo must be completed by the first exam. So, get in touch (by email) to sign up for a day if you are interested. Each memo should be about one to two pages.
Memos can contain some summaries of the week’s readings, but they need to be more than that.
They should tackle some or all of the following:
• What do the day’s readings have in common. You could focus on the arguments as well as
the conclusions (which aren’t always the same).
• How do the readings complement one another?
• What is your overall takeaway from the day’s readings?
• Do you have any unresolved questions about the topic?
These assignments are pretty open-ended and the goal is to demonstrate that you’re engaging with the readings. They’ll be graded primarily on their thoughtfulness and the clarity of your
writing.
