Explain how Hildegard’s theology of the divine feminine affected her musical works.

Although music is the main focus of this course, we are seeking to be mindful of the larger
social, cultural, and political milieu in which each of the studied compositions was written and
performed. For your term paper, it will be your task to conduct a detailed study of a musical
work or several (shorter) works, written during the timeframe under consideration (Middle Ages
to 1775) and to place the music into some kind of broader context.
You are strongly encouraged to choose a work that interests you and one for which there are
sufficient scholarly materials. Strive to focus on a particular aspect of the work, discussing in
your paper only those specific moments in the music that most clearly illustrate your ideas. Also,
be aware that this is primarily a research paper. You will thus be required to consult and engage
with some of the current scholarly literature that has been written on your piece, while forming
your own opinion on the topic.
