Write an essay ONE (1) the two topics explained below. The essay should be done in Microsoft Word
format (double spaced 12pt Times New Roman or Arial font). There is no minimum or maximum
length, however, you should give as much detail as you can. The document containing this essay should
be submitted electronically by attaching it to the Blackboard assignment for the topic that you have
chosen.
If you would like to try for extra credit, write an essay on the other topic (indicate at the top of the essay
that it is the extra credit essay).
Topic 1: Turning the Trolley and Utilitarianism
A complete answer will address all of the following:
1. What was the argument presented in class in defense of the claim that the right thing to do in the
case of the trolley is to turn the trolley? Present and explain the reconstruction of the argument that
I presented in class and in the lecture notes. If there is no reconstruction of the argument in
standard form, numbered premises and conclusion, the argument has not been presented.
2. What is utility and what is the Utilitarian calculus? Use examples to show how these concepts work.

3. What is the fundamental principle of morality according to Mill (hint: AU)?
4. How does Mills fundamental principle of morality work in showing that actions are morally
right/wrong? Give examples to illustrate your points. You may use the ones that I presented.
5. How does Mills Utilitarianism provide support for the argument in favor of turning the trolley?
Explain how it shows that the argument presented above is sound.
