1- Explain how poverty intersects with our justice system such that the poor are more likely to be arrested, convicted, and incarcerated.
2- Explain the connection between domestic violence and poverty.
3-One of the connections we see with poverty and crime is the simple act of one committing crimes to meet their basic human needs. There is strong debate over whether there is always a better option for the poor than committing crime versus the increasing divide between the rich and the poor in this country. Consider the following statistic. The top 1% of wealthiest people in the world control 85% of the worlds wealth. The bottom 90% of the world’s population only holds 15% of the world’s wealth. Does this suggest that crime is justified by the bottom 90% of the people?
4-For this discussion period, I would like to work with Tammy’s Story. What struck me when watching this video was that I have been working for a social service agency for 25 years and I can point to hundreds of clients that I have come in contact with that have exactly the same story and situation as Tammy. What I have found to be the central problem is a debate over the degree to which Tammy and her family are responsible for their circumstances and have to endure the consequences versus the degree to which they are a victim of circumstance such that the community and/or government should help them. I would like your thoughts on this.
