Topic 1: Earthquake Shake Alert
“ShakeAlert is an earthquake early warning (EEW) system that detects significant earthquakes so quickly that alerts can reach many people before shaking arrives. ShakeAlert is not an earthquake prediction, rather a ShakeAlert Message indicates that an earthquake has begun and shaking is imminent” (“ShakeAlert”).
This early warning system is already being utilized in California, with plans to expand to the Pacific Northwest (Oregon, Washington) by May 2021. Other parts of the world, such as Japan and Mexico, already have EEW systems.
Why do you think the United States is just now implementing a system along the Pacific coast?
How can ShakeAlert be successfully integrated into society and coordinated between states?
How could this system be used to reduce damages resulting from earthquakes (i.e. fires)?
Will this system be enough to increase resilience to earthquakes in the United States? If not, what else is needed?
Looking at other parts of the United States, where else should ShakeAlert be deployed and why (i.e. population, risk, tectonic setting)?
