Explain how the future of work in America will be affected because of the COVID-19 pandemic?
Start with a brief description of the history of work in America pre-pandemic as we have discussed – Americans as some of the hardest working people in the world, but with stagnation of wages, loss of union jobs, rise of the ‘gig” economy (freelance, no benefits).
Then came the pandemic, an event of great historical importance.
Now we are (hopefully) entering a post-pandemic phase and here are some possible questions to consider — but there are others.
How will the physical workplace change because of the pandemic?
How will economic strata affect jobs—i.e. how will lower-wage jobs be affected as compared to higher-wage jobs?
What occupations will be adversely affected? What occupations will actually benefit?
How has the pandemic effected the mental and emotional well-being of workers? How have they changed in relation to it?
Important: You may write a paper that examines numerous factors in the future of work after COVID. Or your paper may focus on only one aspect – for instance, how will the physical workplace change? You may not know which direction you will go in until you actually research your paper and discover what’s out there.
You must use at least four(4) new sources—and I mean actually use them: use specific examples from them, briefly quote them (no block quotes). Do not depend on a single source even if you are examining only a single aspect of the topic.
Hints for research:
Look for RECENT articles (2021 preferably)
Log into your school portal account and go to the library and sign up for the New York Times, The Washington Post and the Wall Street Journal. This is free. Once you have the accounts, you can search in Google (i.e., “What Will the Workplace look like after COVID-19, New York Times” which will get you behind the paywall to read the articles.)
Or simply search within the library database.
Other tips: Attach “Pew Research Center” or “Gallup” or “McKinsey Institute” to your Google search inquiries and you will find surveys/statistics on post-pandemic work.
DO NOT USE Wikipedia or cable television outlets or blogs!
