Explain how the literary elements in the short story you selected help to develop the story’s theme?
For the first part of the project, you’re going to select and read a short story, determine the story’s theme, and select which literary elements you’ll be focusing on in your research. Then, you’ll create and submit an annotated bibliography.
Second, determine the story’s main theme. Remember, themes are complete sentences that explain what the author is saying about those subjects that are applicable to the world outside of the literature. You may want to review Chapter 7 as you complete this step.
Third, you need to select what literary elements you want to discuss for your paper. Remember, in the text of your paper, you’ll work to connect these elements to the theme you’ve selected. Each of these elements has a very specific vocabulary and concepts associated with them, and you’ll need to explore those concepts in-depth in your analysis. For example, when we talked about setting, we talked about the importance of historical setting, geographical setting, and physical setting. You’ll need to address each of those in your analysis.
Additionally, rather than just factually listing these elements, you should explain to your reader how these literary elements serve the theme. How are they connected? You may need to review Chapters 2 – 6 in your reading as you work on this section. Fourth, you will create an Annotated Bibliography using three secondary sources that you find in the South Plains College Library. Do not use Internet sources. Do not use Wikipedia.
Your annotative bibliography will be formatted like a References page, with a proper APA title page and APA headers.
For each of the three sources, you’ll provide three things: an APA reference, a summary of the source, and a justification for how it will be used in your research. First, list the reference.
Beneath each reference, you’ll provide an annotation for the source. Each annotation will include 1) a brief summary of the source and 2) a statement of how you think it might be valuable to your research.
You may use first-person pronouns, and you should be explicit and specific in how the resource will contribute to your research. A statement like This book will help me in my research because it contains information about the author’s childhood, which is the focus of my paper is an example. Remember: specific and explicit.
The summary and justification should begin on the first blank line after the citation it accompanies and should be indented .5” from the left margin (similar to the second and third lines of a hanging indent).
