Options:

1. Compare the wealthy characters and the working class characters. How does the novel analyze economic class and what, ultimately, does it propose about the interactions between them?

2. Nick states “There are only the pursued, the pursuing, the busy, and the tired.” How do the characters in the novel fit into those categories and what does this system of categorization say about American life?

3. Does this novel have a protagonist? If so, who is it and why? If not, why does Fitzgerald appear to write a novel that discards such an essential part of story structure?

4. As the narrator, Nick Carraway offers his perspective and judgments often throughout the novel. If we consider the other characters as representative of the time period and Nick as a representation of Fitzgerald’s moralistic leanings, what do his judgements of the other characters and their actions say about Fitzgerald’s perception of the culture of the period?
