Choose ONE of the Essay Prompts below:
Three of the prompts will ask you to provide an analytic answer to the questions posed. They cover a bro: range of topics, and your argument is your answer to the questions. You should use a mix of broad and s information.
One of the prompts will ask you to make your own argument, pro or con, to a specific historical issue. As essay is more focused than the analytic essays, you will need more specific detail, but it is also the chan you to develop your skills in persuasive argument.
The rubric standards are the same for both types of essay.

• Whichever prompt you choose, you must: 1) provide a clear argument addressing all parts of the prompt 2) provide a combination of specific information peopleinvolved, specificincidents, etc with broad information longtermtrends, generalstatementsabouttheperiodinquestion.
• Your essay should logically extend from a thesis statement that articulates your main point, and provide a roadmap for the rest of the essay. Given the multi-part nature of the questions, a thesis statement in this case may be more than one sentence. You should state what your argument is, rather than state what your topic is. This statement will ideally be the last sentence of the introduction.
• Your essay should thus consist of multiple distinct paragraphs.

1. Part of the point of the essays is to demonstrate your ability to draw from the readings assigned in class to answer a question. Outside research cannot serve as a replacement for understanding and incorporating the readings into your essay.
2. Be very careful with sources on the internet – History com, Khan Academy, Wikipedia, and others like them should not be used because their quality can be suspect to one degree or another. Any outside research should be done through the databases available to you digitally through the Ashland University library.
3. Instead of outside research, look to the sources provides in the textbook and the supplemental readings. Try to use at least one supplemental source in your essay.
“A” Work: the thesis is straightforward, clear, and logical. The essay extends logically from the thesis and is supported with evidence throughout. All parts of the essay are relevant. All parts of the question have a clear, well-reasoned answer. A clear conclusion encapsulates the main argument of the work. An essay that has the characteristics of an “A” work but which is under-length may be assigned a lower grade in proportion to the severity of its under-length nature.
*B” Work: the thesis is present but is expressed in such a way that it is difficult to grasp at first; some points of the essay are not well supported with evidence, either due to the lack of evidence or poor use of sources; some body paragraphs are of questionable relevance to the whole work; a conclusion is present. question have some kind of answer, but at least one section could use improvement. An essay that has the characteristics of a “B” work but which is under-length may be assigned a lower grade in proportion to the severity of its under-length nature.
“C” Work: The thesis is present but not well articulated and suffers logical gaps; some portions of the argument are unsupported by evidence. Some portions of the essay are not relevant to the overall work. Not all parts of the question have a clear, satisfactory answer. An essay that has the characteristics of a “C* work but which is under-length may be assigned a lower grade in proportion to the severity of its under-length nature.
“D” Work: the thesis is present but is poorly stated and does not logically follow the evidence available. Much of the project is not appropriately sourced; many of the essay’s body paragraphs are irrelevant to the main argument. At least two parts of the question are not answered. An essay that has the characteristics of a “D* work but which is under-length may be assigned a lower grade in proportion to the severity of its under-length nature.
“F* Work: the essay has no clear argument or thesis; it has little if any evidence to support its conclusion; the various body paragraphs do not form a coherent whole. Submission Requirements:
You are not required to seek outside sources. If citing from a class reading, simply write the name of the author and page number in parenthesis in the body of your essay. For example, Carnegie, 5. If using outside sources, refer to the Chicago Manual of Style for how to cite them in a footnote in the body of your essay. Please also have a list of your sources at the end of your essay.
There is no required number of quotations, but you should use the language from the relevant document or fromyourresearch where the language itself is useful to see for the argument.
No cover page is required. The only identifying information you need to include is your name in the upper right. hand corner of the first page; the essay should start from the top of the page.

Submissions will be in 12 inch, Times New Roman or Arial font, with one inch margins.
Be sure to submit your essay as a Word. doc file; even if using a different processor than Microsoft, other processors give you the ability to save in that format. The instructor will take any formatting issues that crop up from that transition into account
