Explain how to construct a formal outline In constructing a formal outline, keep the following guidelines in mind.
Put the thesis or working thesis at the top.
Make items at the same level of generality as parallel as possible.
Use sentences unless phrases are clear.
Use the conventional system of numbers and letters for the levels of generality.
Always include at least two subdivisions for a category. In other words, before you go to a sublevel, be sure you have at least two subpoints to support the point you are making.
Be flexible. Be prepared to revise your outline as your drafts evolve.
