PAPER TOPICS: Temporary Matter, Mr Pirzada came to Dine, Mrs Sen’s and Interpreter of Maladies
Choose one of the following topics (referring closely to the stories read in class) to create a debatable argument of your own. Please feel free to come up with a topic of your own. Remember the questions listed below are proposed as “aids” to your thinking about the subject. Answers to these questions do not make an argument; they help you evolve an argument.
Please keep in mind your response should be in the form of a formal paper with a thesis and a clear argument (with detailed reference to the text).
Write an essay on any one of the following ( 5 pages paper):
Consider the role of the child in the 2 stories discussed in class highlighting the need it fulfills in the narrative.
Pick any theme—care, neglect, connection, communication, isolation, alienation—and show how it operates through any character/s focusing on the end it achieves.
How does space define changing relationships in Lahiri’s stories?
Pick any trope—food, dress—and discuss how these universal concepts as they surface as cultural markers build a story of their own.
In the title story “Interpreter of Maladies” India is put in dialogue with its diaspora. What then is the malady? And how does the healing of the malady fail? Analyze the text through interactions of character and dialogue (referring to race, gender, ethnicity, nationality age and /or class). Pick any one or more of these concepts and clearly formulate an argument with a specific focus on “Interpreter of Maladies.”
The point is to implement your thoughts derived from the class readings and discussions to develop a nuanced reading of the topic of your choice.
Remember to use specific examples from the text to set up and substantiate your argument. Make sure that your essay has a clear arguable thesis that is discussed logically and organized into a coherent whole.
