Explain how you are when and where influence the privilege you may have or the barriers you may face? Diversity is not unidimensional. For example, I am a highly educated older white woman in a male-dominated professional field. While being white and well-educated may give me some privilege, being a woman and older can put up barriers for me.
Now let’s think about how your characteristics intersect to make it easier or more difficult for you to live the life you want to live.
In this assignment, I hope some of you will create a graphic representation to go along with the description you give in your paper. However you decide to represent the concept, here is the assignment:
(1) Start by making a list of your personal characteristics that you think represent “diversity”
(2) Look back at the personal story of privilege that you wrote for a previous assignment and make a list of characteristics that you think give you privilege
(3) Make a list of your personal characteristics that you think create barriers for you – what do you expect to need to overcome because of who you are?
(4) Make a list of the supports and personal resources that you have
(5) Finally, in whatever form you want (graphic, paragraphs, spoken word…) create a picture of yourself that will demonstrate how the intersection of all that makes you who you are will get you where you want to be in life.
