The instruction for the paper format is attached to the uploaded file box with three articles for my research proposal paper. The information below is a general idea of what my topic is about.
1. Explain how you could use the previously identified quantitative and qualitative data collection to design a mixed methods research study.
My originally quantitative research was on how to prepare primary students for academic readiness by implementing appropriate assessments for play-based learning. I will include observations and interviews from participating teachers’ and parents’ opinions on how the applied assessments have affected their children’s academic learning (qualitative data). The previously mentioned collected data (quantitative and qualitative) will create a mixed methods research.
2. Which type of mixed method design will you select, and why? (i.e. the convergent design, the explanatory sequential design, or the exploratory sequential design). Describe the sequence of the quantitative and qualitative data collection. Will the quantitative or the qualitative data be more prominent in your mixed methods research study? (See Chapter 16 for an explanation of the different mixed methods designs).
The convergent design is the best fit for my research because I can use the instrument Tools of the Mind (TOOLS) to collect the data of the academic readiness of the primary students (quantitative) and then use the interviews and observations from parents and teachers to seek if the TOOLS instrument was effective (qualitative). The quantitative and qualitative data can be used to check the effectiveness of each other. According to Creswell and Guetterman, pertaining to the convergent design states that ” qualitative, in-depth observation of a few people offers strength to quantitative data that does not adequately provide detailed information about the personal experiences of individuals and a detailed understanding of the setting in which they respond to research problems” (2019). Meaning that the instrument TOOLS that are used in my research study will not be able to tell the personal and visual detailed information of how the child learns academically. However, the instrument is designed to just measure what the child knows. So, therefore the qualitative collected data is more prominent in my mixed research study because it will visually in-depth tell us how the students learn.
3. After completing this activity, do you think you will do a quantitative, qualitative, or mixed methods research proposal for your final paper? Why?
After completing this activity, I will do a mixed methods research proposal for my paper because my collected data need one another to provide the best results of the effectiveness of the academic learning by numbers and visual observations.
