The
movie Training Day revolves around two characters, Alonzo Harris (Denzel
Washington) and Jake Hoyt (Ethan Hawke). Jake is an unseasoned officer assigned
to veteran Alonzo to learn the ropes of being a narcotics officer.
Using
the lenses of virtue ethics, formalism, and utilitarian perspectives:
Explain
how you perceive the events that resulted in the attitudes and actions of
these two characters.
Discuss,
using one of the ethical perspectives above, why Jake decided to take the
final actions depicted in the movie.
Be sure
to detail specific scenes from the movie that exhibit your position and provide
evidence from the textbook or other sources that support your argument.
Make sure to follow the guidelines in the Ethics
Response Paper Details handout for style and
format of the paper. Your paper needs to be uploaded to Engage. Hardcopies and
email copies will not be accepted. If you have any questions, let me know as
soon as possible. Waiting until the day before the paper is due to ask questions
could result in a late paper and late penalties being assessed.
The
approach to a response paper has a number of steps, but the broad categories
include recognizing the moral issue, evaluating alternative actions from
various moral points of view, making a decision, acting, and considering the
action in retrospect. A good response paper:
should
begin with an introductory paragraph about the issue you are going to
address, the characters and event in the movie that depicted the issue;
the
next paragraph should give information about the different moral or
ethical perspectives that can explain the behavior of the characters,
including definitions and explanations from outside sources;
the
next paragraph should be how your personal moral/ethical beliefs compare
to the applicable perspectives, and which you believe is correct. Describe
how your actions would be the same or different from the character’s
actions and why you would or would not act differently;
the
paper should end with a summary of the information you provided.
All
papers should be written using the class modified APA 6th edition format,
including in-text citations and a reference list. Giving proper credit to other
people’s work is the ethical thing to do. Spelling, grammar, and mechanics are
also important so the meaning of your paper does not get lost or confused.
