When Help May Cause Harm
You are a human services professional practitioner working at a non-profit organization that helps families in the community access needed services, including housing, employment, Medicaid, Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF), education access, and medical insurance for children. You receive a referral about a family in need of your agency’s services. You make contact with the parents, but you learn that the family are undocumented refugees fleeing another country. They are fearful of even speaking with you, and they will not consider any engagement or services that risks contact with a public or government service. Their fears of being deported are real. Still, the family is very clearly in need of many of the services your agency offers. What do you do? What are the ethical issues that could arise? What is your first inclination for how to help? What are you responsible for legally?
