Terrier News
Terrier News is a monthly newsletter devoted to various breeds of terriers and topics of interest to terrier owners and breeders. Annie West, the editor and publisher asked you to help her design a system to enter and manage the hundreds of classified ads that Terrier News Publishes. Some ads are for dogs wanted; some are for dogs for sale; and some offer products for services.
Task
Design a suitable source document for ads that are telephoned or mailed in.
Your paper should be between 500 and 750 words and reflect scholarly writing and current APA standards. Please include citations to support your ideas.
The source document for “Terrier News” needs to be unambiguous and contain all required fields to properly list any supported classified ad.
Because these ads are from phone calls or mailers, we need to make sure that the source document contains all information in a logical organized manner so we can properly placed the ad every time (so long as the entire document is filled in).
Because free form text fields allow users to enter information in any format, checkboxes should be used when possible to force users to make selections – i.e. type of ad for example (dogs wanted, dogs for sale, products / services).
We also need to be able to contact the individuals placing the ads. So we need to make sure we collect contact information in the format that our database accepts. i.e. We should specify that state should be a code or fully written. We should specify that phone numbers require area codes and should be a valid 10 digit phone number. We should have checkboxes asking if phone numbers are cell phones or home numbers. We should optionally ask for email addresses.
Many classified ads come with a cost or price. This field should have its own area on the source document and should be optional in case the cost is negotiable. Perhaps a check here to “call for price” would be an option.
The body of the ad contains the details of the dog, product or service. Any qualifications or instructions should be listed – i.e. 250 words max (additional characters will be truncated). The data entry form would be restricted to this value and such an instruction would prevent the analyst from having to decide which words are most important.
Optionally you could declare that any characters over 250 are 2 cents each (or similar).
The overall idea behind this exercise was to get you thinking about data entry without human thought – i.e. How can your source document guarantee that you get all the information you need on a sheet of paper without having to question ANY of it (assuming it was properly filled in). Simply copying the skeleton source document from your book is not applicable to this particular exercise.
Make sure to distinguish between the various types of items that will exist on the diagram – ie. objects should contain attributes about the object and methods implay actions in the flow of the application where object are utlized.
