Explain Lincoln’s stance on race and slavery. Consider his participation in the Lincoln Douglas debates, what we learned in To Make Men Free, and his role in the Civil War?
What were the causes of the Civil War? What led to increasing sectionalism in the country?
What accounts for the Union victory in the Civil War? Please try and think more broadly about this and do more than simply restate lecture points). Why do you think the Civil War was important?
Essays (25pts each): Please respond to both of the following. The essay should be at least two pages.
What led to the Mexican-American war? What were the effects of American conquest and settlement on various groups? Californios, Native Americans, and ultimately, Americans? To answer this question, you must draw on both lectures and the “Racial Faultlines” and American Genocide readings.
What was Reconstruction and was it a success or failure? Explain. (You must include both lecture and sources we’ve read including the excerpt from The Warmth of Other Suns & Stoney Road.)
