Explain the concept of a ‘Fallen Woman.’ What type of woman could fall, and what would cause her to do so?

The Victorian Era constructed the idea of the ‘Fallen Woman.’ Over time, this idea became a driving force in how society understood the concepts of virginity, purity, and sex work. Women of different classes were pushed further apart as the rich became richer and the poor became increasingly disadvantaged. In the Reconstruction and early Jim Crow eras, white women’s femininity was increasingly compared to Black women’s sexuality and masculinity.
Explain the concept of a ‘Fallen Woman.’ What type of woman could fall, and what would cause her to do so? Was there any way to return to the pedestal after such a fall? What about the women who could not fall, was it possible for them to be saved?
