Now that you’ve narrowed your focus to a particular discourse community, find five substantial primary sources (articles, blog posts, message board threads, book chapters, etc.) that discuss the same set of issues, that apply the same principles, that adhere to the same methodology, or that seem to be in conversation with one another. In other words, select five texts of some substance that you think represent or embody your chosen discourse community. These sources will help you really understand your discourse community. They will also be used as evidence to help support the claims you make in your discourse community analysis.
For each source, give a formal MLA-style citation followed by a brief summary paragraph (at least 150 words) that characterizes these aspects of the source:
Context – Explain the nature of the conversation, debate, or broader disciplinary question that the source addresses.
Argument – Articulate the main and most specific assertion or insight of the source. In other words, ask yourself, what particular point does this source offer to the conversation?
Evidence – Briefly explain how the author supports or develops the point. What evidence is presented? What reasons or rhetorical appeals are given?
Opposing Perspectives – If significant, briefly explain how the author takes on, concedes to, or qualifies opposing perspectives.
